Christoph Ahlhaus was born in Heidelberg in 1969. In 1999 he completed his law studies in Munich with the Second State Examination. In 1985 he joined the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party of Germany. In 2001 he began his political career as CEO of the Hamburg CDU. He further managed the political campaign for the 2004 elections to the Hamburger Bürgerschaft, the Parliament of Hamburg. He also became a member of Hamburg’s Parliament and was Home Affairs Spokesman of the CDU parliamentary group in 2004. Since 2006 he is a member of the Senate, the government of Hamburg. In 2006 he had first been appointed to State Secretary in the Ministry of the Interior in Hamburg and then since 2008 as Minister of the Interior. In August 2010 Christoph Ahlhaus has been elected First Mayor and President of the Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.

Mr. Almunia was born in Bilbao in 1948. After his graduation in Law and Economics at the University of Deusto, Spain, and his follow-up studies at the École Pratique des Hautes Études in Paris, he joined the “Senior managers in Government” programme at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Afterwards, he was an associate lecturer on Employment and Social Security Law at the University of Alcalá de Henares in Madrid. From 1982 to 1986, Mr. Almunia was Minister of Employment and Social Security, from 1986 to 1991 he was Minister of Public Administration. He became Member of the European Commission in 2004. Since February 2010 Mr. Almunia has been the European Commissioner for competition as well as Vice-President of the European Commission.

Mr. Almunia is also the Founder and Director of “laboratorio de Alternativas” a think-tank, and was Director of the research programme on “Equality and redistribution of income” at the Fundación Argentaria.

Hannes Androsch was born in Vienna in 1938. After studying economics he started work as a chartered accountant and auditor. While still at university, he embarked on his political career: Chairman of the Austrian Union of Social Democratic Students (1962); Secretary, then Consultant on economic issues to the Social Democratic parliamentary party (1963-67); Elected Member of the Austrian Parliament (1967-1970); Minister for Finance (1970-81); and Vice Chancellor (1976-81). After leaving politics, he served first as Director General of the leading Austrian bank Creditanstalt (1981-88) and afterwards as a Consultant to the World Bank.

In 1989 he founded AIC Androsch International Management Consulting. Today he manages his holding company, which controls a range of industrial enterprises with facilities located in Asia as well as Europe. Mr. Androsch is active in scientific and cultural organisations, is author and editor of numerous books, and is a regular contributor of articles to a wide range of journals and periodicals. He was Austria’s Commissioner General at the Expo 2010 in Shanghai.

Barberis was born in 1937 in Turin. In 1964 he started with FIAT and in 1974 he became Manager of the Teksid plant in Mirafiori. From 1982 to 1993 he was Managing Director of the Magneti Marelli and later on in 1993 Central Manager of FIAT AUTO. In 1996 he left the FIAT Group for the General Management of the San Paolo Bank in Turin. From 1997 to 2001 he was Chairman of Piaggio & C. and in 2002 he was called back in FIAT as General Manager of the Holding and subsequently he became Managing Director and Vice Chairman of the same. Since October 2002 he is Vice Chairman of COMAU SpA. From July 2004 he is President of the Turin Chamber of Commerce. In March 2007 he was appointed as Vice-President of the Piedmont Agency for Investments Export and Tourism and, still in the Chamber system, in 2008 he took on as Vice President of the ICC – International Chamber of Commerce.

Martin Brudermüller was born in Stuttgart in 1961. He studied chemistry at the University of Karlsruhe. After taking his doctorate and spending a postdoc period at the University of California, Berkeley, Brudermüller started work in BASF’s Ammonia Laboratory in 1988. Thereafter, he held a number of positions within BASF before being appointed to the Board of Executive Directors in 2005. Brudermüller is currently responsible for the Performance Polymers and Polyurethanes Division as well as for the Asia Pacific Regional Division. He has been based in Hong Kong since April 2006.

Hamad Buamim was appointed as the Director General of the Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry in November 2006. Educated in the USA, Buamim graduated with Honors (Magna Cum Laude) from the University of Southern California - Los Angeles in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. In 2002, He received an MBA with Honors in Finance from the University of Missouri - Kansas City, USA.

In addition to his current position, Buamim is involved in a number of Dubai’s leading private organizations in the financial and real estate sectors. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Emirates NBD Bank, Chairman of Emirates NBD Capital, Chairman of Diners Club-UAE and a Board member of Union Properties.

Recently, Buamim was appointed Vice Chairman of the World Chambers’ Federation (WCF), the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) for a three-year mandate starting from January 2010.

Lord Heseltine was a Member of Parliament in Britain from 1966 to 2001. He was a Cabinet Minister in various departments from 1979 and Deputy Prime Minister from 1995 to 1997. He is founder and Chairman of the Haymarket Group, one of the largest privately owned media companies in the UK. He has written books on Europe and more recently his political autobiography, Life in the Jungle. Lord Heseltine is an enthusiastic gardener and has created an arboretum for over 3.000 different trees and shrubs.

With more than 25 years of experience, Lilly Chung is currently the lead client service partner and advisory partner for many of Deloitte’s strategic clients in the high-technology industry. At Deloitte, Lilly is the leader of the Semiconductor Affinity Group, China Gateway Initiative, and Deloitte’s Women’s Initiative in the Northern Pacific region. She also serves as an advisory partner for the Deloitte University. Lilly is the chairman of the Monte Jade Science and Technology Association, which consists of senior-level executives, VCs and entrepreneurs in the semiconductor, mobile computing, biotech, and cleantech industries. She was also an officer for Harvard Business School’s Alumni Association in Northern California.

Lilly holds B.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering, and an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern California; an M.S. in Engineering Management and Industrial Engineering from Stanford University; and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.

Vítor Constâncio is Vice-President of the European Central Bank since 1 June 2010. He was Governor of the Banco de Portugal from 1985 to 1986 and from February 2000 to May 2010.

He graduated in Economics from the Universidade Técnica de Lisboa. Before having been appointed as Governor of the Banco de Portugal, he was Executive Director of the Banco Português de Investimento (1995-2000) and non-executive Director of the Electricidade de Portugal (EDP), the Portuguese national power utility (1998-2000).

He was Invited Senior Professor of Economics at the Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão from 1989 to June 2010, culminating a long academic career.

 

As Chairman & President of CHINT Group, Mr. Nan Cunhui is also member of 11th National People’s Congress (NPC), member of the Standing Committee of All China Federation of Industry and Commerce (ACFIC), Presidium of CFIE, Vice-Chairman of China Machinery Industry Federation (CMIF), and board member of China Foreign Affairs University. He was awarded “Top Ten Most Outstanding Youth of China”, “World Award of Outstanding Achievements for Yong Entrepreneurs”, “Economic Celebrity of the year 2002” etc, and was listed as one of the“100 Outstanding Youths to Affect 21st Century of China”. Mr. Nan established CHINT Group in 1984, one of the leading industrial groups in China. Its business covers LV/HV electrical equipments, T&D equipments, meter and measuring equipments, wiring accessories, automobile parts, factory automation, photovoltaic battery/modules, and etc. He is also known as a successful and charitable entrepreneur, donating over RMB 100 million to charity.

Mr. Li Dongrong was born in 1954 and holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Central University of Economics and Finance. From 1984 to 1994 he worked at the Shaoguan municipal and Guangdong Provincial branches of the People’s Bank of China (PBoC) and of the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE), including serving Vice President, Party Secretary and Deputy Bureau Chief, etc. From 1998, he was appointed Vice President of Guangzhou Branch of PBoC and Deputy Director of the Guangzhou branch of SAFE, and was later elected as Deputy Director of the SAFE Central Office in 2002. Since December 2008, Mr. Li has been Assistant Governor of PBoC.

Doris Fischer studied Business Administration and Sinology in Hamburg and Wuhan (China) and received her Ph.D. in economics at the University of Gießen. She has done extensive research on competition, regulation and industrial policies in China. In recent years she has been invited as guest professor to Seikei University (Tokyo) and Free University of Berlin. Her current research focus is on furthering the concept of innovation systems in the context of low carbon development and climate change policies with a special interest in the challenges posed by large, fast developing countries to the traditional paradigm of industrialization and economic growth. Doris Fischer leads for DIE in a network on China-Europe relations and climate change that brings together DIE, the Institute of Development Studies and the Institute for World Economics and Politics at CASS in Beijing.

Jürgen Fitschen started his career in the corporate banking business at Citibank in 1975, ultimately serving as a member of the Management Committee, Germany.

After joining Deutsche Bank in 1987, Fitschen held executive positions in Thailand, Japan and Singapore, before becoming a member of the “Global Corporates and Institutions” Divisional Board in 1997. A year later he joined the newly designed “Global Corporates and Institutions“ division. In 2001 he was appointed to Deutsche Bank Group Board of Managing Directors where he was responsible for the “Corporate and Investment Bank”.

Since 2002 Fitschen has been a member of the Group Executive Committee of Deutsche Bank. In 2005 he became Head of the newly established Regional Management worldwide and was appointed as CEO Germany. In these capacities Fitschen was appointed to Deutsche Bank Management Board in 2009. Fitschen is chairman of the OAV.

Mr. Guo received from Fudan University a bachelor’s degree in philosophy in 1989 and an MBA degree in 1999. He was the co-founder of Fosun Group, Chairman & President of Fosun Group from 1994 to 2007 and became Chairman & CEO in 2007. He is a Director of Nanjing Steel United and Fosun Pharma and non-Executive Director & Vice Chairman of Sinopharm since 2003. He is a deputy to the 10th & 11th NPC and a member of the 9th CPPCC, and was appointed policy consultant to the Shanghai municipal government from 2001 to 2002. Awards received include: “Outstanding Private Entrepreneur of China”, “Top 10 Leaders in Future Economy of China”, “Top 10 New Private Entrepreneurs 2003”, “CCTV People of Financial Year 2004”, “Outstanding Entrepreneur in Private Sector on Staff Caring” (2005), “Industry & Commerce Category Winner” of “Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year” (2006), etc.

Since September 2006, Haifeng Ling is the Vice President of the European Region of Huawei Technologies, which is a leader in providing next generation telecommunications network solutions for operators around the world. Mr. Ling received his diploma degree in physics from the Ruhr University in Bochum in 1989. After his graduation he worked for T-Systems in Aachen. In 1996, he joined Siemens in Munich. In 2000, he was appointed as Vice President of the UMTS Business Unit, where he was responsible for the development of the Chinese UMTS technology. From 2005 to 2006, Mr. Ling was Managing Director of ZTE Germany in charge of the business in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg. In 2006, he joined Huawei and established the global Business Unit for Deutsche Telekom in Bonn. In 2009, he was appointed to the European Headquarters in Düsseldorf for the business area Public Affairs and to build up the Enterpise Business Unit for Huawei Europe.

Mr. Liu Haiyan, Senior Engineer, was born on November, 26th, 1941 in Chongqing. After graduating from Beijing Institute of Petrochemical Technology with a Master Degree in 1968, he joined Sinopec Beijing Yanshan Company and gradually worked up to General Manager and Chairman. Mr. Liu was appointed Deputy Mayor of Beijing in 1998 and remained in post until 2003. From 2003 to 2007, he joined Huaxia Bank as Chairman and was at the same time a members of National Committee of CCPPC. He is now Senior Vice Chairman of China Federation of Industrial Economics, Vice Chairman of China Association for Quality as well as a concurrent professor at Tsinghua University, China University of Petroleum and Dalian University of Technology.

Dietmar Harting studied Electrical Engineering and Economics and entered his father's company in 1967. In 1973 he became Managing Shareholder of HARTING Elektronik GmbH and since 1996 he has been President of HARTING KGaA.

Mr. Harting is Honorary Member of the Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies (VDE); Honorary President of the German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers’ Association (ZVEI); Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board and Chairman of the construction and investment committee at Deutsche Messe AG, Hanover; Chairman of the Exhibitors’ Board Hanover Fair; Member of the Presidential Board of BDI (Federation of German Industries).

He received the „Order of Merit, First class“, the DIN honorary ring and the honorary citizen of the municipality of Espelkamp in 2009. Furthermore the Trade fair’s honorary medal in gold by Deutsche Messe AG in 2008, the „Niedersächsisches Verdienstkreuz 1. Klasse“ in 2004 and the „Order of Merit on ribbon“ in 1998.

Dr. Axel C. Heitmann was born in Germany in 1959. He studied chemistry in Hamburg and Southampton, United Kingdom, obtaining a science doctorate in 1988. He joined Bayer in 1989. After completing a post-graduate trainee program and following two years as a plant manager, in 1993 Heitmann transferred to Bayer in the United Kingdom as site manager. In 1996, he was appointed Head of Production and Technology at PolymerLatex, the then newly formed joint venture between Bayer and Degussa. From March 1999 to January 2002 he was Managing Director of the Bayer subsidiary Wolff Walsrode. He was then appointed Head of the Rubber Business Group at Bayer. On 1, July 2002, he became a member of the Executive Committee of Bayer Polymers, and in this capacity was responsible for Bayer Polymers APAC’s activities in Shanghai until the middle of 2004. On September 16, 2004, Heitmann was appointed Chairman of the Board of Management of LANXESS AG.

Frank Horch was born in Geversdorf, Germany in 1948. He is currently Chairman of Blohm + Voss International GmbH. After having completed his studies in shipbuilding engineering in 1974 Frank Horch worked as development engineer, and later on as Director for development and production at the Phoenix AG. In 1991 he was appointed Chief Representative of the Phoenix AG. In 1993 he joined the Friedrich Krupp AG and became Managing Director of the factory Hamburg-Harburg Krupp Kunststofftechnik. From 1997 to 2001 he was Chairman of the Executive Board at the Krupp Elastomertechnik. From 2001 to 2005 he filled the position of Chairman of the Executive Board at the ThyssenKrupp Elastomertechnik. For the following two years he acted as Chief Executive Officer of the Harburg-Freudenberger Maschinenbau GmbH. Frank Horch holds many honorary posts, among others he has been Chairman of the Board of the Industrieverband Hamburg e.V. (Association of Hamburg Industries) since 2007. In May 2008 he was elected President of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce.

Capt. Wei Jiafu received his Master’s degree from Dalian Maritime University and a Doctoral degree in Marine Architectural Design from Tianjin University. He had been Managing Director of the Sino-Tanzania Joint Shipping Co., President of COSCO Holdings (Singapore) Pte Ltd., Managing Director of Tianjin Ocean Shipping Co., and Managing Director of COSCO Bulk Carrier Co., Ltd. He was appointed President and CEO of COSCO Group in November of 1998. Capt. Wei was elected into the 16th and 17th CPC Central Committee for Discipline Inspection in 2002 and 2007. In Nov. 2007, Capt. Wei was elected the first Chairman of China Association of Trade in Services (CATIS). Other titles of Capt. Wei include: Member of Advisory Board of Bo’ao Forum for Asia, Advisor of Panama Canal Authority, Chairman of China Shipowners’ Mutual Assurance Association, Council member of The Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs and Advisor of Harvard Business School.

Born in Jiangsu province in 1957, Zhang Jianwei graduated from the Foreign Trade English Department of UIBE and obtained an EMBA diploma from ECIBC. Since September 1980, he successively worked in the Financing Department and Overseas Enterprises Management Department of China National Foreign Trade Transportation Corporation (CNFTTC). Since July 1985, he worked as principal staff member of China National Chartering Corporation (CNCC), Assistant President of NPES, Deputy General Manager, General Manager of CNCC, and Assistant President of CNFTTC, holding concurrent position as General Manager of CNCC. In February 1997, he was appointed the Executive Director and Vice President of SINOTRANS. In July 2002, he was concurrently appointed as President of SINOTRANS Limited and later as Director of SINOTRANS, President and Chairman of SINOTRANS AIR.

Born in 1946, Mr. Zhu graduated as a mine construction major from Northeast Institute of Technology. As a Senior Economist and Professorate Senior Engineer, Mr. Zhu successively served as assistant to General Manager in Angang Group, GM of Angang Import & Export Company and GM of Angang International Trade Corporation. He became Chairman & GM of Shougang Shuicheng Iron & Steel Group in February 1997. From December 1999 to July 2000, he worked from Director & Deputy GM up to Vice Chairman & GM. Since December 2002, he sits as Chairman & Party Secretary of Shougang Group. Mr. Zhu was a deputy to the 10th and 11th NPC, a delegate of the 17th CPC National Congress and works as Vice President of China Iron & Steel Association, Executive VP of CEC and Presidium Member of CFIE. Awards received include: Guizhou May 1st Labour Medal, Guizhou Top 10 Outstanding Manager, National May 1st Labour Medal, Beijing Top 10 Influential People, Beijing Model Worker, National Outstanding Entrepreneur etc.

Ma Kai was born in Shanghai in 1946. He joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) in 1965. In 1982, Ma Kai graduated from the Department of Political Economics of the People's University in Beijing. Ma has spent his career in Beijing, initially with the Xicheng Planning Commission. In the mid-1980s he was elected Deputy Director of the National Planning Commission. From 1993 to 1995 he served as Vice Minister in charge of the National Commission for Restructuring the Economy, followed by the position as Vice Minister in charge of the National Planning Commission until 1998. Ma Kai has served as Deputy Secretary-General of the State Council from 1998 to 2003. He then was Minister of the National Development and Reform Committee from 2003 to 2008. Ma was a member of the 16th CPC Central Committee and is currently a member of the 17th CPC Central Committee. Since 2008, he is State Councilor as well as Secretary-General of the State Council.

Christoph Keese (1964) is President Public Affairs at Axel Springer AG, Europe’s largest newspaper publisher and a leader in digital media. Mr. Keese is involved in his company’s digital strategy and co-chairs the German publishing industry’s committee on Intellectual Property and Copyright. A passionate journalist himself, Mr. Keese co-founded “Financial Times Deutschland” and was the paper’s editor-in-chief before editing “Welt am Sonntag” and “Welt Online”. Mr. Keese is an economist, graduate of Henri Nannen School / Hamburger Journalistenschule and author of the widely noted books “Rettet den Kapitalismus” (Save Capitalism) (Hoffmann und Campe, 2004) and “Verantwortung jetzt” (Responsibility Now) (C. Bertelsmann, 2006).

Hans-Ulrich Klose was born on the 14th June 1937 in Breslau. After finishing school, including one year in Clinton, Iowa, USA, he studied law and worked as public prosecutor in Hamburg. In Hamburg he also started his political career and became Mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City in 1974. After having resigned from this duty in 1981, he was elected for the Federal Parliament in 1983 and still represents his constituency for the Social Democratic Party. During his work in Parliament, he obtained several offices, e.g. as treasurer for the Social Democrats, chairman of SPD-parliamentary group and Vice-President of the Bundestag. Currently he is Vice-Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Coordinator for German-American Relations and Chairman of the Parliamentary group USA. Hans-Ulrich Klose is married and has 5 children. He has released three poetry volumes.

After studying economics in Mainz, Glasgow and Hamburg, he successfully attended the Holtzbrinck school of Journalism in Dusseldorf. His next stop was the business weekly “Wirtschaftswoche”. In 1996, he then moved on to “manager magazin”, dealing mainly with economic policy and technology trends. In 1999, the Financial Times Deutschland hired Klusmann. He helped develop the newspaper, which was launched in February 2000. Klusmann then became features editor, in charge of background stories, comments and editorials. He then moved on to become the FTD’s news editor. In July 2003, Steffen Klusmann returned to the “manager magazin” as vice editor-in-chief. In 2004, he joined the Financial Times Deutschland again, this time as editor-in-chief. Since April 2009, he has also been editor-in-chief for „Capital“ magazine. Furthermore, he is speaker of the committee of editors-in-chief of the G+J Wirtschaftsmedien.

As a metallurgist, he was elected Academician of CAE in 1995. Born in 1937 and a graduate of the Beijing Institute of Iron and Steel Engineering, Prof. Xu has lectured in a number of renowned universities in China. He worked as Deputy Chief Engineer & Technical Manager in Scandinavian Lancer Corporation, Sweden. He later served as Vice Chairman of Shanghai Education Commission and Chairman of Shanghai Planning Commission. Then he was elected as Vice Mayor in 1992, Mayor of Shanghai in 1995 and held the position for over six years. He became the President of CAE by election in 2002, and was reelected in June 2006. In 2010, he became the Honorary Chairman of CAE after his completion of two terms of Presidency. He was elected Vice Chairman of the 10th National Committee of CPPCC in 2003 and Chairman of CFIE in November, 2003.

Mr. Xu Lejiang is Chairman of Baosteel Group Corporation, alternate member of the Central Committee of CPC, concurrent posted as standing committee member of China Association for Science and Technology, Executive Director of Chinese Society for Metals, Vice President of China Iron & Steel Association, Vice Chairman of Shanghai Science and Technology Association, and President of Shanghai Society for Metals. He is also member of the 11th and 12th People’s Congress of Shanghai. Mr. Xu joined Baosteel in 1982, gradually appointed Deputy-Director, Director of blooming mill, cold rolling mill, and Assistant to Director of Baoshan Iron & Steel Works; from 1994 to 2006, he was appointed Vice President, President of Baosteel Group, and promoted to Chairman of Baosteel Group Corporation in January 2007. Mr. Xu was born in February 1959. He holds a Master’s degree and also a professorate degree in senior engineering.

Mr. Ding was born in Zhejiang. After completing his Bachelor and Master at Zhejiang Medical University in Hangzhou, he obtained his Medicinae Doctor at University of Arkansas for Medical Science, U.S., in 2000, and worked as Senior Research Associate at Arkansas Cancer Center. He is founder and chairman of Zhejiang Beta Pharma Inc., a leading pharmaceutical company primarily focused on the discovery, development and commercialization of new drugs to treat cancer, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. Mr. Ding has been publishing over 20 research papers in the area of infections diseases, cancer gene therapy and new drug development. He has successfully developed Icotinib, a new anti-cancer drug. Due to his outstanding achievements he was appointed for the “1.000-Elite-Program” by the Central Coordination Group for Talent Work in 2009.

Christine Loh, a lawyer by training, is the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of the independent, non-profit public policy think tank, Civic Exchange. Prior to this, Loh had a successful career in politics, and before that in business. She is an International Adviser to the G8+5 Climate Change Dialogue, Senior Policy Adviser to the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group. Loh has been widely recognised for her achievements, including as one of the World Economic Forum’s “Global Leaders for Tomorrow” in 1994; recognised by Business Week as one of ‘The Stars of Asia’ in 1998. She was named ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ in 2003, named by Asia Inc as one of Asia’s “Under-50 Movers and Shakers”; named ‘Woman of the Year’ by Hong Kong Business for 2006, and received an OBE in 2007. She was recognised as one of the ‘Heroes of the Environment’ by TIME in October 2007, as well as named as one of fifteen ‘Ethical Leaders of 2007’ by the London-based publication Ethical Corporation.

Peter Löscher has been President and Chief Executive Officer of Siemens AG since July 1, 2007. He has many years of international management and leadership experience in a variety of companies both in and outside Germany – for example, Merck & Co. Inc. (U.S.), General Electric (U.S., UK), Amersham plc. (UK), Aventis Pharma Ltd. (Japan), the Hoechst Group (Germany, Spain, U.S., UK, Japan) and Kienbaum und Partner (Germany). Mr. Löscher studied economics at Vienna University of Economics and Business and at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. A graduate of Harvard University’s Advanced Management Program, he was awarded an honorary doctorate of engineering by Michigan State University in 2007. Peter Löscher is a member of the Supervisory Board of Munich RE, Chairman of the Asia Pacific Committee of the German Economy (APA), Vice Chairman of the European Roundtable of Industrialists (ERT), and Co-Chairman of the EU-Russia Industrialists’ Roundtable (IRT). He also holds positions in a number of social and cultural organizations.

Mr. Aguiar Machado was born in 1959. He completed his Masters Degree in International Economics and Finance at the Instituto Superior de Economia in Lisboa in 1983, and his Diploma of Advanced Studies on European Integration at the College of Europe in Bruges in 1984. Since January 2009, Mr. Aguiar Machado has been the European Commission’s Deputy Director General for Trade. Prior to this, he was inter alia Deputy Director General in charge of Asia and Latin America, DG External Relations, Director for Trade in services and investment, bilateral trade relations with the Americas and the Far East, DG Trade, Director for WTO, Trade in services and investment; agriculture, SPS, and sustainable development as well as bilateral trade relations with China, DG Trade, and Head of unit for Trade in Services, DG Trade. Additionally, Mr. Aguiar Machado served as Counsellor for WTO Affairs at the Commission’s Delegation to the International Organisations from 1994 to 1998.

In 2007, Christof Gabriel Maetze took over responsibility for Commerzbank AG’s Global Financial Institutions Department and additional responsibility for integration of Dresdner Bank FI Business. As Global Head and Member of the Executive Management Board, he performs a wide range of tasks including relationship management and business-line responsibilities for Commerzbank’s business with Financial Institutions worldwide. Prior to this assignment, he was Global Head of International Products and International Coverage at Dresdner Bank, Frankfurt am Main. From 1999 to 2003, he was Head of Trade Finance and responsible for Financial Institutions coverage for HypoVereinsbank Munich. During the merger between Bayerische Vereinsbank and Hypo-Bank he was appointed Project Manager in charge of international merger activities. From 1994 to 1997 he spent three years as First General Manager of the newly established regional branch for South East Asia based in Singapore.

 

David Marsh is Senior Advisor to London-based asset management company Soditic CBIP LLP and chairman of management consultancy SCCO International. Previously he worked for City merchant bank Robert Fleming, corporate finance boutique Hawkpoint and German management consultancy Droege. He worked for the Financial Times between 1978 and 1995, including in France and Germany, becoming European editor. Marsh is deputy chairman of German-British Forum, advisory board member of Centre for European Reform, treasurer of Institute for Corporate Cultural Affairs, board member of British Chamber of Commerce in Germany and honorary professor at the University of Birmingham. He was made Commander of the British Empire in 2000 and was awarded the German Order of Merit (Bundesverdienstkreuz) in 2003. Marsh has written four books: Germany – Rich, Bothered and Divided (1989); The Bundesbank – The Bank that Rules Europe (1992); Germany and Europe – The Crisis of Unity (1994); The Euro – The Politics of the New Global Currency (2009).

Philippe Maystadt’s career has included various key posts within the Belgian Government over a period spanning almost twenty years. He was Minister of Finance for a duration of ten years (1988-1998) and Chairman of the MFC of the International Monetary Fund for five years (1993-1998). Author of numerous studies and publications in the field of economic and financial law, he has also been a Professor at the Faculty of Law of the Catholic University of Louvain. Philippe Maystadt chaired several high-level committees in European and international financial organisations before being appointed as President of the European Investment Bank on January 1, 2000.

Matthias Nass was born July 9, 1952 in Bevensen, Germany. From 1971 to 1974 he studied History, Chinese Studies and Communications at Goettingen University, followed by a Fulbright Scholarship at the University of Hawaii. Back in Germany, he finished his studies in Hamburg. From 1978 to1982 he was Secretary of the German Association for Asian Studies and Editor of the quarterly „Asien“. Having completed the Hamburg School of Journalism, he became member of the Editorial Staff of DIE ZEIT with emphasis on East and Southeast Asia. From 1990 to 1997 he was Deputy Political Editor and Managing Editor of DIE ZEIT. Since 1998 Matthias Nass is Deputy Editor-in-Chief of DIE ZEIT.

Gordon is the Chairman of McKinsey Asia, responsible for McKinsey’s client service in the region. Gordon opened McKinsey’s office in Beijing and led McKinsey’s Greater China practice for many years. In addition, he has led McKinsey’s Strategy and Technology practices in Asia. Gordon has been on McKinsey’s global board of directors since 2003. Gordon has been based in China since 1993 and has been with McKinsey since 1986. Gordon works with leading Asian companies, mainly in North Asia, on large transformational programs combing perspectives from strategy, operations, leadership and technology. Currently he leads McKinsey’s research into the globalization of Asian enterprises and is on the board of the McKinsey Technology Institute, the firm’s think tank on long term technology trends. Gordon is chief editor of the Chinese editions of the McKinsey Quarterly and of McKinsey on Technology. Gordon graduated in electrical engineering from Oxford University and as a Baker Scholar from Harvard Business School.

Graduated from Chongqing University for Engineering (Bachelor Degree) in 1983, Mr. Liu Qizhong awarded a Doctor’s Degree for Organizational Leadership by Nova Southeastern University, USA in 2008. From 1983 to 1992, he worked for Shanghai Port Machinery Plant (SPMP). Later, he joined Shanghai Zhenhua Port Machinery Co., Ltd. (ZPMC) when the company was founded in February 1992. He has been appointed as a Director of the Board and Vice President (for sales) of ZPMC since 1994. He was responsible for all marketing and sales activities for the company since its establishment on Feb. 14th, 1992. Mr. Liu was part of the company when it grew from zero in 1992 to number one container crane supplier in the world since 1998. ZPMC now has 70% market share for container cranes with products in 76 countries. Its revenue in 2009 is 4 billion USD.

In his capacity as Chief Administrative Officer, Jens is over-sighting all the risk management functions, including Credit Risk, Market Risk and Operational Risk Management. He is also responsible for Treasury, Audit, Legal, Human Resources, Corporate Real Estate Services, Global Sourcing, Corporate Security & Business Continuity and Communications in China. He is the Chairman of the Risk Management Committee; member of the China Executive Committee and also member of the Board of Directors of Deutsche Bank (China) Co., Ltd. Jens joined Deutsche Bank in 1991. After four years in Corporate Banking and Risk Management in Leipzig, Germany, he held various positions in Hong Kong (Corporate Banking), Singapore (Global Banking Division), Istanbul, Turkey (Global Corporate Finance). Before he came to China he was in Global Banking Germany (Country Coverage) covering German Large Cap Clients. Jens holds a diploma in business administration.

Mr. Wang Runsheng was born in 1955. He studied at Shanxi University of Finance and Economics and earned a Master Degree from the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Naval Engineering University. In 1978, he joined the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Corporation of the People’s Republic of China (MOFTEC). His postings included the Deputy Director of Department of Finance, Division Director of Department of Finance, Deputy Director of Special Commissioner’s Office of MOFTEC in Guangzhou, Deputy Director General of Department of Accounting and Financing. Later, he joined the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China (MOFCOM), his posting included the Deputy Director General of Department of Finance and Planning, Deputy Director General of Department of Finance and Deputy Director General of Department of Aid to Foreign Countries. Since 2007, he is Deputy Director General of China Foreign Trade Centre and President of China Foreign Trade Center (Group).

Eberhard Sandschneider graduated from the Saar University, Saarbrücken, in English Language and Literature, Latin, History and Political Science. In 1986, he received his PhD at the Saar University, and after his postdoctoral lecture qualification in 1993, he was offered chairs of political science by the universities of Potsdam, Erlangen-Nuremberg and Mainz. From Mainz, where he held a position as professor for International Relations between 1995 and 1998, he moved to Berlin. In August 2003, he succeeded Karl Kaiser as Otto-Wolff-Director of the Research Institute of the German Council on Foreign Relations, and concurrently holds a chair for Chinese Politics and International Relations at Freie Universität Berlin. Sandschneider published or edited more than a dozen books and made numerous contributions to academic publications focusing on Chinese and East Asian politics and international relations in Asia Pacific.

H.E. Dr Michael Schaefer was born in Germany in 1949. He studied law in Munich and Geneva, and earned a law degree from the University of Munich in 1974. He prepared a doctoral thesis at the Max Planck Institute for International Public Law in Heidelberg and worked with the United Nations’ Political and Security Council Division in New York before passing his bar examination in 1978 in Heidelberg.

In 1978, Dr. Schaefer joined the diplomatic service of Germany. His postings included the German UN mission in New York, the German Embassy in Singapore, and the German UN Mission in Geneva. He was Head of the Western Balkans Task Force, Special Envoy for South Eastern Europe and Director-General for Legal Affairs in the Foreign Office in Berlin before becoming the Federal Foreign Office’s Political Director in 2002. Since August 2007 he is German Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China.

Gerhard Schröder was born April 7, 1944 in Mossenberg, Germany. After completing an apprenticeship and graduating from secondary school, Gerhard Schröder began to study law and passed the first state examination in 1971, second state examination in 1976 and admission to practice law. From 1980 to 1986 and 1998 to 2005 he was member of the German Bundestag. In 1990 Mr. Schröder was elected as Minister-President of the State of Lower Saxony. On October 27, 1998 Gerhard Schröder was sworn in as the seventh Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. He remained in office until 2005. Gerhard Schröder is currently Independent Director of Anglo-Russian oil company TNK-BP, Chairman of the shareholders’ committee of the European-Russian pipeline company Nord Stream AG and freelance lawyer in Hanover.

Günter Schucher received his Ph.D. in Sinology at the University of Hamburg. For more than two decades he closely follows China’s economic and social development. His research focuses on social issues in the PRC, especially on the urban labour market and social movements, as well as on cross-strait relations. Dr. Schucher published and edited numerous articles and books on China and Asia. He regularly contributes to the Journal of Current Chinese Affairs. Since 2001 he serves as Senior Research Fellow at the GIGA Institute of Asian Studies in Hamburg that he represented as acting director for some years. Since 1991, Dr. Schucher has been secretary and is now treasurer of the German Association of Asian Studies. He is the editor of the refereed journal ASIEN. The German Journal on Contemporary Asia.

Nikolaus W. Schües was born in Hamburg in 1936. After his apprenticeship in the shipping business in Hamburg, London, Dublin and New York, he joined the shipping company F. Laeisz in 1961. Since 1973, he is general partner of F. Laeisz. As of 1986, he has been a member of the Plenary Assembly of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce. He was elected Vice-President in 1990 and President in 1996. After his presidency he was reelected as Vice-President in 2002. From 1997 to 2005, Mr. Schües served as Vice-President of the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK) and in 2006 has been elected as member of the Senior Committee of DIHK.

Mr. Yao Shenhong, born in Shanghai, studied at the China Foreign Affairs University and Nankai University, and achieved a master degree on international economics. Mr. Yao started to work for the China International Center for Economic and Technical Exchanges (CICETE) from 1986, then transferred to the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic cooperation of China (MOFTEC), and worked for the Bo’ao Asia Forum for three years. Mr. Yao worked at the Ministry of Commerce of China (MOFCOM) as Vice Director of Department of International Trade and Economic Affairs, Vice Director of Department of Information Technology, and held concurrent post of Vice Director of Information Office and spokesman. In 2008 he went back to the China International Center for Economic and Technical Exchanges (CICETE) as Director-General. Mr. Yao has been acting as Executive Vice Chairman and Secretary General of the China Association of Trade in Services (CATIS) since October 2008.

Founder of CAIJING Magazine in 1998, Ms. Hu provided the leadership that brought CAIJING to its eminent position as one of China’s most authoritative business publications. She left CAIJING in 2009 to create the breakthrough new media group, Caixin Media Company Limited. She began her career as an international editor and reporter for Workers’ Daily in 1982. Internationally recognized for her achievements in journalism, Hu was named by Foreign Policy as one of Top 100 Global Thinkers November 2009, received the 2007 Louis Lyons Award for Conscience and Integrity in Journalism from the Nieman Foundation at Harvard University, and was called the most powerful commentator in China by Financial Times, and The Wall Street Journal cited her as one of the “Ten Women to Watch” in Asia in 2006. She was named International Editor of the Year by World Press Review in 2003 and one of BusinessWeek’s “Fifty Stars of Asia” in 2001.

James Siano was born and raised in New York City. He graduated with an MBA from Pace University in 1981 after which he held various positions in the US, joining Swatch Group as its US Vice President in 1988. Transferred to Hong Kong in 1991, he developed Swatch Group’s business across the Asian region including the opening of a subsidiary in Taiwan and Korea. With his expertise in the hard goods luxury market and especially for watches, James Siano joined Montblanc in 1998 as its President and CEO for Asia-Pacific. He has materially contributed to the successful rise of this region for Montblanc, namely entering the Chinese market with an own subsidiary in 2005. As a member of the Executive Board of Montblanc International, James Siano participates in the worldwide strategy development for the brand, reflecting the strategic importance of Asia as a future growth market.

Dr. Theo Sommer pursued his academic studies in history, political science, and international relations at the University of Tübingen; Manchester College; and the University of Chicago. In 1958, he started his career at DIE ZEIT. In 1969/1970, Sommer was called upon to set up and head the Policy Planning Staff of the German Defence Ministry. From 1972 to 1992, he served as Editor-in-Chief of DIE ZEIT and afterwards joined Marion Countess Dönhoff and former Chancellor Helmut Schmidt as one of the paper’s co-publishers. In the 1990s, he acted as Vice-Chairman of the commission on “Common Security and the Future of the German Army”, was a member of the International Commission on the Balkans, and the Independent International Commission on Kosovo. In addition to his current appointment, Sommer is dean, moderator and academic head of the Bucerius Summer School in Hamburg. He was president of the German society for Asian studies and is a member of the German-Japanese Forum, the German-Korean Forum and the Indo-German Advisory Group. In 1979 he published a book on the rise of China (Die chinesische Karte).

Jan Boje Steffens started his shipping career in 1978 with Hapag-Lloyd, specialising in container logistics, and by 1984 he had responsibility for Hapag-Lloyd’s worldwide container logistics. In 1988, he joined Senator Linie in a similar capacity and in 1996 became a member of the board, being responsible for operations, marketing and sales. In July 2002, Mr. Steffens joined the German shipping company Rickmers-Linie as President & CEO. Under his command, Rickmers-Linie inaugurated the Round-the-World Pearl String Service, the first liner service for breakbulk, heavylifts and project cargoes. In 2005, Mr. Steffens became Managing Partner and CEO of Rickmers Holding. In 2009 was appointed Chairman of the newly-founded “Heavy Lift Club”.

Prof. Dr. Thomas Straubhaar was born in Switzerland in 1957. He studied economics at the University of Berne, were he received his master’s degree in 1981 and earned a Ph.D. in 1983. He then has worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley, USA. In 1987 he obtained his habilitation at the University of Berne for a thesis on “The Economics of International Labour Migration”. His professional career started at the universities in Konstanz, Bern, Freiburg and Hamburg. Since 1999, Thomas Straubhaar is Professor of Economics at the University of Hamburg. Furthermore, he is Director of the Hamburg Institute of International Economics (HWWI) since 2005. In 2009 Professor Straubhaar was awarded with the Helmut Schmidt Fellowship of the ZEIT Foundation at the Transatlantic Academy in Washington, DC. His research interests lie in the fields of economic policies, regulatory policy, welfare and social policies.

Executive Vice President Ruediger Stroh is General Manager of the Identification Business and of NXP in Germany. Before joining NXP in 2009, Ruediger led LSI’s Storage Peripherals business, overseeing silicon solutions for hard disk and solid state drives. He assumed his position as Executive Vice President at LSI as part of the merger with Agere Systems, where he headed Agere’s Storage Division. Prior to Agere he served as CEO for a number of start-up companies including startups focused on Storage Area Networks and Wireless LAN as well as a nano-materials company. Ruediger began his career at Siemens AG where he held multiple management positions before joining Infineon Technologies and participating in the company’s IPO as Senior Vice President and General Manager of the company’s Network and Computer Storage, Data Communication and Consumer business. Ruediger holds a degree in business administration and engineering from the University of Applied Science in Saarbruecken.

 
 

Johannes Thammer is currently Head of Group Sales Strategy and Projects for the Volkswagen Group. Born in Germany on September 4, 1955 he holds a Diploma in mechanical engineering and has a long and successful history in the world of automobiles. Mr Thammer started his career in 1982 as a controller for chassis at AUDI Group before joining the Finance & Marketing Department of BMW, where he worked from 1983 – 1991. AUDI Group wanted him back in 1991 and made him an executive in the division of marketing and distribution, a position he retained until 1999. Thereafter Mr Thammer went on to become vice-president of product and sales planning at Toyota Europe Headquarters. Returning to Audi Group he became Head of Sales Customer Service & Original Parts in 2005, a position he kept until 2008. From 2008 until 2010 he gained a thorough insight of the Chinese market as President of Audi Sales Devision in China. Just this September he became Head of Group Sales Strategy and Projects at Audi’s parent company Volkswagen AG.

James C. Wei is a member of the Executive Board of the Beiersdorf AG and is responsible for region Asia. He was born in Kao-Hsiung, Taiwan, in 1957 and has a B.S.E.E from the National Taiwan University and an MBA from the University of Chicago. In 1984 he started his career at Procter & Gamble, where he spent almost 20 years working among others in Switzerland, the US, Taiwan and finally China. In 2003, he changed to AVON COSMETICS and took over responsibility for the areas “Strategic Planning”, “New Markets” and the Asia-Pacific region. In 2009, James C. Wei joined Beiersdorf AG as responsible board member for the Asian business with China, the Management Units Singapore and Thailand as well the Market Leadership Units Indonesia, Korea and India and is assigned to further develop the business in this strategically important market.

Prof. Zhang Wei-Wei is Senior Research Fellow at Modern Asia Research Centre, Geneva, and Guest Professor at Fudan University and Tsinghua University, China. He worked as a senior English interpreter for Deng Xiaoping and other Chinese leaders in the mid-1980s. A former visiting fellow at Oxford, he holds a Ph.D. from the Graduate Institute of International Studies, Geneva University. His published books include Ideology and Economic Reform under Deng Xiaoping (Kegan Paul, London, 1996), Transforming China: Economic Reform and its Political Implications (Macmillan, London, 2000), and Cross-Strait Interactions in the New Era: Challenges and Opportunities (co-edited with Philippe Regnier, MARC, Geneva, 2004). He has written extensively in English and Chinese on China’s economic reform, Chinese politics, foreign and security policy and Beijing-Taipei relations.

Born in Bad Honnef near Bonn in 1961, Dr. Guido Westerwelle studied law at the University of Bonn and obtained a doctoral degree in law. He started his political career in 1980 when he joined the Free Democratic Party (FDP). He chaired the Young Liberals from 1983 to 1988. From 1993 to 2000 he chaired the Bonn district and was General Secretary of the Free Democratic Party (FDP) from 1994 to 2001. Since February 1996 he has been a Member of the German Bundestag and since May 2001 he has held the national chair of the Free Democratic Party (FDP). From May 2006 until October 2009 he was chair of the FDP parliamentary group. He holds an honorary doctorate from Hanyan University, Seoul, South Korea. Dr. Guido Westerwelle has been Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs and Deputy Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany since October 28, 2009.

After taking an MA degree (Dipl.-Ing.) in food engineering with majors in the packaging and print industry as well as business administration, Brigitte Wolff began her professional career at a German consulting firm being involved in strategy projects in various branches in Europe, the US, and Asia. Following a takeover of the company by a global US consultancy, she was responsible for project management for global accounts. In 1995, she moved to a position as Marketing Director and Key Account Manager for a global manufacturer of flexible packaging where she was responsible for the Chinese market. In 2000, she established an Internetbased marketing platform for business in China and founded a consulting firm in China, helping clients to do business successfully in China. 2007 her company merged with Management Engineers, an international operating Management Consulting Firm, making her the Managing Director China. Since 2008 she is board member of the German Chamber of Commerce Shanghai.

Graduated from Zhongnan University of Economics in 1982, she served for Industry and Transportation Department of the Ministry of Finance as Deputy Division Director, Division Director and Deputy Director General respectively from 1982 to 1996. She then worked as Deputy Director General of Economy and Trade Department of the Ministry of Finance. In March 1999, she assumed the position as Director General of Finance and Assets Management Department of State Power Corporation of China. From July 2000, she was Deputy Chief financial officer and Director General of Finance and Property Management Department, State Power Corporation of China. And from November 2001 to December 2002, she was the Chief Financial Officer and Director General of Finance and Assets Management Department, State Power Corporation of China. In December 2002, she was appointed as Executive Vice President of State Grid Corporation of China.

Mr. Mao Zhenhua has successively done economic research in Hubei Provincial Bureau of Statistics, Hainan Provincial Government Research Center and Research Office of the State Council. He founded China Chengxin Credit Management Co., Ltd. in 1992. As a prolific researcher in macro-economics, capital market and credit rating theory, he published monographs including The Theory of Capitalized Corporate System. He presided over research on Chinese credit Rating methods and mechanism, initiated and engaged in several major symposiums in China and abroad. Graduated from Wuhan University, Mr. Mao received a Ph.D. in Economics and a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS). His other titles are Executive Director of CFIE, Director of China Entrepreneurs Forum, Director-General of Dong FuReng Foundation, Director of the Institute of Economic Research of RUC as well as Adjunct Professor of the Graduate School of CASS and Southwestern University of Finance and Economics.

Tang Zilai graduated from Tongji University in urban planning, and received PhD from University of Liverpool. Before his current position, he was planner at Jurong Town Corporation, Singapore. Mr. Tang has a long experience in both academic and professional circles. His research interests include international comparison of urban and regional planning, globalization and urban and regional development, transformation of urban spatial structure and urban policy analysis and evaluation. He has been involved in a variety of professional practices with many awards at national and municipal levels. Since 2007, he has been appointed as Chief Planner of UBPA in charge of concept development, site plan and design control. He also is the member of the executive committee of Chinese Academy of Urban Planning and the Chairperson of the Planning Expert Advisory Board of Shanghai Municipal Government.
