Peter Berz currently works as Head of Unit in the Directorate General for Trade of the European Commission in Brussels responsible for trade relations with the Far East. Until August 2012, he worked as Deputy Head of Unit in the Directorate General for Trade responsible for trade relations with South and South East Asia, Australia and New Zealand. From 2002 to 2007, Peter Berz acted as Deputy Head of the Trade Section of the Delegation of the European Commission in Washington, DC. Prior, Peter Berz served from 2000 to 2002 at the Directorate General for External Relations of the European Commission covering the relations with the U.S. and Canada. From 1993 to 2000, he worked in the Directorate General for Trade of the European Commission in the areas of intellectual property rights and trade in textiles. Peter Berz obtained his law degree from Munich University. He published articles on the European Community’s textile policy and the WTO Agreement on Textiles and Clothing.

Since 1980 Elmar Brok has been a Member of the European Parliament. Currently he serves as chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, which he was also from 1999 to 2007. Brok is also a member of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs, the EP delegation for the relations with the People's Republic of China and a substitute member of the EP delegation for the relations to the USA. He is co-chair of the Transatlantic Legislators’ Dialogue.

Brok was the European Parliament’s negotiator at several treaty negotiations including the EU-Treaties of Amsterdam (1996/1997), Nice (2000) and Lisbon (2007), the EU-Constitutional Convention (2001-2002), the European Stability Mechanism (2011-2012) and the International Treaty on Fiscal Stability (2011-2012).

Elmar Brok is a member of the Federal Executive Board of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and chairman of the CDU Federal Committee on Foreign, European and Security Policy. Between 1996 and 2012 he was chairman of the CDU Ostwestfalen-Lippe. Brok is also President of the European Union of Christian Democratic Workers (EUCDW).

Martin Brudermüller is Vice Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of BASF SE, a position he assumed in May 2011. He is responsible for the divisions Performance Polymers and Polyurethanes as well as for the Region Asia Pacific. Brudermüller has been a member of the Board of Executive Directors since 2006. Prior to this, since 2003, he was President of the Functional Polymers division. From 2001 to 2003 he was Senior Vice President Strategic Planning.

Brudermüller started his career with BASF in 1988 in the Ammonia Laboratory. He was born in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1961. From 1980 onwards he studied chemistry at the University of Karlsruhe, Germany, and received his degree there in 1985. After earning his doctorate in Karlsruhe in 1987, he did a postdoc at the University of California, Berkeley, United States.

Hamad Buamim has been the Director General of Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry since November 2006. He also serves as the Vice Chairman of the World Chambers Federation - ICC in Paris.

Educated in the USA, Buamim graduated with Honors (Magna Cum Laude) from the University of Southern California - Los Angeles in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. In 2002, he obtained an MBA with Honors in Finance from the University of Missouri - Kansas City. Buamim is also a member of the Board of Directors for Dubai World, Chairman of National General Insurance and Board member of Union Properties. Prior to joining Dubai Chamber, Buamim worked in various positions in the public and private sectors. He was the Secretary General of Dubai Economic Council, a Corporate Manager in HSBC Bank, a Lecturer of Finance & Banking in the UAE University's College of Business & Economics and a Senior System Engineer in Dubai Electricity & Water Authority.

Reinhard Bütikofer is a Member of the European Parliament for the German Green Party (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen). He is a member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and the Parliament's rapporteur for an effective raw materials strategy for Europe. He also sits on the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Subcommittee on Security and Defence. He is a member of the Delegation for Relations with the United States and a substitute member of the Delegation for Relations with China. Mr. Bütikofer is a vice president and the treasurer of his political group (The Greens/European Free Alliance) and speaker of the German Green Party's delegation to the European Parliament. Prior to his election to the EP, Mr. Bütikofer was national party chairman of the German Green Party from 2002 to 2008.

Dr. Thomas Enders was appointed Chief Executive Officer of EADS effective 1 June 2012 after being CEO of Airbus since 2007. He studied Economics, Political Science and History at the University of Bonn and at the University of California in Los Angeles. Prior to joining the aerospace industry in 1991 (Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm), he worked, inter alia, as a Member of the Policy Planning Staff of the German Minister of Defence. At MBB and subsequently DASA he held various positions, including Chief of Staff, Director Corporate Development & Technology, and Head of Defence Systems.

Following the creation of EADS in 2000, he was appointed CEO of the EADS Defence and Security Systems Division, holding this position until 2005 when he was appointed co-CEO of EADS. Dr. Enders was President of the BDLI (German Aerospace Industry Association) from 2005 to 2012. Moreover, from 2005 to 2009 he chaired the Atlantik-Brücke e.V.

Dr. Mo Fan, male, was born in Heilongjiang Province China, in June 1961, Senior Engineer, Chairman of Shanghai YOUDE Energy-saving Technology Development Co., Ltd. He served as the engineer of the China Building Materials Industry Planning and Design Institute, and was director of foreign affairs of the China International Engineering Consulting Corporation, and was the visiting fellow of German Fraunhofer Institute of Physics, first secretary of the Chinese Embassy in Germany, and deputy director of the National Maglev Transportation Engineering Technology R&D Center.

He has been engaged in plant design, project evaluation, green building, macroeconomic research, the Shanghai Maglev Demonstration Line construction and Maglev Transportation Technology development. He is currently working on a lightweight and composite materials technology services, and evaluation of rail transit project consulting services.

Jürgen Fitschen started his career in the corporate banking business at Citibank in 1975. After joining Deutsche Bank in 1987, Fitschen held a wide range of executive positions in Thailand, Japan, Singapore, London and Frankfurt. Since 2002 Fitschen has been a member of the Group Executive Committee. In 2004 he became Global Head of Regional Management and was appointed CEO Germany. In 2009 Fitschen was appointed to the Management Board. Together with Anshu Jain, Fitschen has been Co-Chairman of the Management Board and Group Executive Committee since June 1, 2012. Fitschen is Chairman of the OAV.

Heiner Flassbeck has served since 2006 as Director of the Division on Globalization and Development Strategies of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. He is the principal author and the leader of the team preparing UNCTAD's Trade and Development Report. The Trade and Development Report is the flagship annual publication of UNCTAD covering both recent and longer term issues in the world economy, with particular emphasis on the implications for developing countries.

Mr. Flassbeck is a member of international forums dealing with prospective development issues or with burning topics facing the world economy. He is a member of the Commission on the Measurement of Economic Performance and Social Progress and he participates in "The Shadow GN" meetings (chaired by Professor Joseph Stiglitz). He is the author of numerous books and articles on macroeconomic issues, in particular on the current financial crisis and its impact on the real economy. Prior to joining UNCTAD, Mr. Flassbeck worked with the German Council of Economic Experts, the Federal Ministry of Economics, the German Institute for Economic Research and the Federal Ministry of Finance as Deputy Minister responsible for international affairs, the European Union and IMF.

Mr. Wan Gang went to work in the rural area of Yanbian Prefecture, Jilin Province as an educated youth in 1969. He graduated with a bachelor's degree from Northeast Forestry University in 1978, after which he joined its faculty. From 1979 to 1981, he was a postgraduate in experimental mechanics at Structural Theories Research Institute of Tongji University, where he got his master's degree in 1981 and served as a faculty member from 1981 to 1985. Between 1985 and 1991, he studied and obtained a doctorate (Dr. Ing.) at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Technical University Clausthal of Germany. From 1991 to 2001, he worked in German Audi Corporation. Since January 2001 he held several senior positions at Tongji University, China, including among others Dean of New Energy Automobile Engineering Center. In July 2004 he became President of Tongji University (Vice Minister level). In December 2006, he became Vice Chairman of China Zhi Gong Party and was elected as Chairman in December 2007. In April 2007, he was appointed as Minister of Science and Technology. From 2003, he served as member of the National Committee and the Standing Committee of the 10th CPPCC. In March 2008, he was elected Vice Chairman of the 11th CPPCC. Minister Wan is in charge of the overall administrative affairs. He oversees the Department of Development Planning and National Major Special Project Office.

Karel De Gucht graduated in 1976 from the Vrije Universiteit Brussels (VUB) with a law degree. From 1976 till 2001, he practiced law. From 1980 to 1994 De Gucht was a Member of the European Parliament.

Since 1977 De Gucht is member of the Bureau of the PVV-Open Vld political party. From 1995 till 2003 he was a Member of the Flemish Parliament and served from 2007 till 2009 as Minister for International Trade and in 2004 as Minster for Foreign Affairs of Belgium.

In 2009, he became EU Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid and was elected in 2010 as EU Commissioner for Trade.

Karel De Gucht currently also gives several hours of lectures in European law (free of charge) at the VUB. Since 2002 he has the honorary title of Minister of State in Belgium

Dr. Axel C. Heitmann was born in Germany in 1959. He studied chemistry in Hamburg and Southampton, United Kingdom, obtaining a science doctorate in 1988. He joined Bayer in 1989. After completing a post-graduate trainee program and following two years as a plant manager, in 1993 Heitmann transferred to Bayer in the United Kingdom as site manager. In 1996, he was appointed Head of Production and Technology at PolymerLatex, the then newly formed joint venture between Bayer and Degussa. From March 1999 to January 2002 he was Managing Director of the Bayer subsidiary Wolff Walsrode. He was then appointed Head of the Rubber Business Group at Bayer. On 1, July 2002, he became a member of the Executive Committee of Bayer Polymers, and in this capacity was responsible for Bayer Polymers APAC’s activities in Shanghai until the middle of 2004.

On September 16, 2004, Heitmann was appointed Chairman of the Board of Management of LANXESS AG.

Mr. Yan Heming was born in April 1942 in Jiangsu Province. He graduated from university with a graduate degree. Starting from Oct. 1962, he worked in the State Administration of Materials and the Ministry of Materials. He was transferred to China Shiprecycling Company in August 1985 and worked as Division Head up to Deputy General Manager until September 1994. Mr. Yan became General Manager of Chinese Medicinal Materials Corporation and China Shiprecycling Company in 1994 and was appointed as Inspector to China Huaxing Group. He took office as Chairman of China National Shiprecycling Association (CNSA) in 2002 and turned Honorary Chairman of CNSA in December 2011. As a senior expert in the shiprecycling industry with a rich leadership experience, Mr Yan Heming has made significant contributions in promoting “green recycling” concepts, rallying state policy support, strengthening international shiprecycling cooperation as well as developing China’s renewable energy industry and recycling economy.

 

Ms. Chak Mei Hing, Master of Management of Tulane University, United States, is now President of Heung Kong Group, Chairwoman of Kinhom Group, Chairwoman of the Shenzhen Heung Kong Holdings Co., Ltd.
Under Ms. Chak’s leadership, Heung Kong Group, founded in 1990, after nearly 21 years of development, has become a large-scale private enterprise group with more than 20,000 employees and an expanding business field in home furnishing circulation, real estate, aluminum and financial investment.
Ms. Chak Mei Hing currently serves as standing committee member of the All China Women's Federation, Vice Chairwoman of the China Association of Women Entrepreneurs, Vice President of the China Council for the Promotion of Industrial Development, Honorary President of the Women Entrepreneurs Chamber of All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, the Standing Committee member of the CPPCC Guangdong Provincial committee, Vice Chairwoman of the Guangdong Federation of Industry and Commerce, Vice Chairwoman of the Guangdong Provincial Women's Federation and Vice Chairwoman of the Women Entrepreneurs Association of Guangdong Province.

Wolfgang Hofheinz, CTO Bender Company Group / Germany, has been active in various national and international technical committees for electrical standardization for thirty years. On the subject of electrical safety he regularly publishes expert articles in trade journals, is invited speaker at respective events, is a lecturer at the Giessen University of Applied Science and author of several books.

In 2011 he was elected as President of the DKE German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technology. He had already received the badge of honor of the DKE German Commission for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies of DIN and VDE for his extraordinary dedication to the field of electrotechnical standardization. The laureate of the IEC1906 Award was honored for his foundation work in establishing an IEC standard series for testing, measuring or monitoring of protective measures in low-voltage distribution systems.

Dr. Werner Hoyer was born 1951 in Wuppertal (Germany). He received a PhD in economics from Cologne University where he worked as a senior research as­sistant and later as an associate lecturer in international economic relations at the Cologne University. In 1985 he became Director of the Economics and Information Department of the Carl Duisberg Society.

From 1987 until end of 2011 he was Member of the German Bundestag. During his time at the German Bundestag he held several senior positions in the Free Democratic Party (FDP) Parliamentary Group including Whip, Deputy Chairman and Spokesman on Security Policy and later on Foreign Affairs. He served also as Secretary General of the FDP.

From 1994 to 1998 and then again from 2009 to 31 December 2011, he was Minister of State at the German Foreign Office, responsible inter alia for Political and Security Affairs, European Affairs, and Commissioner for Franco-German Cooperation. In 2000 he became the President of the European Liberal Democratic Reform Party.

Since 1 January 2012 he has been serving as President of the European Investment Bank.

Shada Islam is Head of Policy at Friends of Europe, a leading independent think tank in Brussels. She launched FoE’s very successful Asia Programme in February 2011 and is also responsible for the publication of policy briefs, commentaries and op-eds as well as the supervision of conferences, seminars and roundtable discussions.

Before joining Friends of Europe, Shada worked as Senior Programme Executive at the European Policy Centre, with special responsibility for Asia. Shada has worked in Brussels for 25 years as EU, NATO and WTO correspondent for the Far Eastern Economic Review, Asia’s leading weekly news magazine as well as chief EU correspondent for the English language section of the German News Agency, dpa.

An experienced journalist and commentator, Shada specializes in geopolitical, economic and trade policy issues involving Europe, Asia, Middle East, Africa and the United States. She is a regular contributor to international publications and her extensive broadcast experience includes work for the BBC, Radio France Internationale and Radio Netherlands.

Lu Jianzhong was born in 1963. He holds an MBA and a PhD in Management Science and Engineering. Lu worked as senior accountant and senior economist. Since 1983 he has held several senior positions including General Manager, Enterprise Management Director, Deputy Chief Economist at CCCC First Highway Engineering Co., Ltd. Tianjin Tanggu highway project and as General Manager of the ring road project in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He serves currently as president of Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co., Ltd.

Henry A. Kissinger served as U.S. secretary of state (1973-1977) and national security advisor (1969-1975). At present, he is Chairman of Kissinger Associates, Inc., an international consulting firm. He is also a member of the International Council of J.P. Morgan Chase & Co.; a Counselor to and Trustee of the Center for Strategic and International Studies; an Honorary Governor of the Foreign Policy Association; and an Honor Member of the International Olympic Committee. His academic career included appointments as member of the faculty of the Department of Government and the Center for International Affairs at Harvard College, study director in Nuclear Weapons and Foreign Policy at the Council of Foreign Relations. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973, the US Medal of Freedom in 1977 and the Medal of Liberty in 1986. Dr. Kissinger is the author of several books and has also published numerous articles on United States foreign policy, international affairs and diplomatic history.

Robert Koller is a partner in the Frankfurt office of international law firm Simmons & Simmons, heading the debt capital markets practice in Germany. He advises on capital markets and financial regulatory law with a special focus on financial products in Renminbi, project and asset finance bonds, SME financing and high yield issuance. Inter alia he advised the managers on the issue of some of the first bonds denominated in Yuan Renminbi (RMB) in Europe. Robert Koller is admitted in Germany as Rechtsanwalt, in Spain as abogado and in England and Wales as solicitor. In addition, he is a Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) charter holder and is the co-head of the CAIA Germany Chapter. He is a frequent speaker on financial products in his area of expertise and regarding the Chinese currency.

Mr. Xu Lirong was appointed as Director and President of China Shipping (Group) Company (China Shipping) in August 2011. He is currently Vice Chairman of China Shipping Container Lines Co., Ltd. and China Shipping Development Co., Ltd. He is also Chairman of China Shipping (Hong Kong) Holding Co., Ltd., China Shipping (Europe) Holding Co., Ltd., China Shipping (North America) Holding Co., Ltd., China Shipping (South-east Asia) Co., Ltd., and China Shipping (West Asia) Co., Ltd.

Mr. Xu started his career in 1975 joining China Ocean Shipping (Group) Company (COSCO). He has held a wide range of positions in COSCO including Vice President and Chairman of Trader Union of COSCO Group, Vice President of China COSCO, Deputy General Manager of China COSCO Holding Co., Ltd., Managing Director of COSCO Container Lines Co., Ltd., a marine captain, Deputy Director of the ship management department and Deputy General Manager of COSCO Shanghai, and General Manager of COSCO Shanghai Freight Co., Ltd. He also served as President of Shanghai Shipping Exchange. Mr. Xu has extensive experiences in corporate management, ship management and container business operation.

Xu Lirong, a Senior Engineer, graduated from Dalian Maritime University majoring in ocean-going ship maneuvering and received his MBA degree in Shanghai Maritime University.

David Marsh focuses on his chairmanship of OMFIF, a think-tank-style association of official and private sector asset managers from around the world. He is also Senior Advisor to London-based asset management company Soditic CBIP LLP and a Board Member of Henderson Eurotrust plc. Previously he worked for City merchant bank Robert Fleming, corporate finance boutique Hawkpoint and German management consultancy Droege. He worked for the Financial Times between 1978 and 1995, including in France and Germany, becoming European editor.

Marsh is deputy chairman of German-British Forum, advisory board member of Centre for European Reform, board member of British Chamber of Commerce in Germany and honorary professor at the University of Birmingham. He was made Commander of the British Empire in 2000 and was awarded the German Order of Merit (Bundesverdienstkreuz) in 2003.

Marsh has written several books including The Euro – The Battle for the New Global Currency (2009).

Dr. Ignace Van Meenen joined Rickmers Group in October 2011. He is Chief Financial Officer and Deputy CEO of Rickmers Holding and also a member of the Supervisory Board of Rickmers Maritime Trust in Singapore.

After his studies of law in Gent and Osnabrück he started his career at the Deutsche Bank AG in several financial positions in Germany and the Americas. Thereafter he held leading management positions as Finance Director and CFO in RAG AG, a leading mining & chemical group, the international media company RTL Group S.A. and the real estate DIC Group.

Fritz Horst Melsheimer was born in 1950. He has more than 30 years of experience working in the insurance sector. After his studies at the universities of Bochum, Würzburg and Hamburg he joined the Albingia Versicherung AG in 1978. In 1991he became Member of the Board. In 1993 Mr. Melsheimer joined the Hamburg-Mannheimer Versicherungs-AG as Board Member. In addition, he became Board Member of ERGO Versicherungsgruppe AG. Currently Mr. Melsheimer is Chairman of the Board of Management of HanseMerkur Versicherungsgruppe, responsible for personnel, auditing, controlling and public relations. Furthermore Mr. Melsheimer is inter alia President of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Board of Finanzplatz Hamburg e.V., joint founder of Gesundheitsmetropole Hamburg e.V. (Health Metropolis Hamburg), Member of the Advisory Board of Deutsche Bundesbank – Hamburg headquarters, Member of the Economic Advisory Council of HSH Nordbank AG, and Member of the Central Committee of the Association of Private Health Insurers (PKV).

Matthias Nass was born July 9, 1952 in Bevensen, Germany. From 1971 to 1974 he studied History, Chinese Studies and Communications at Goettingen University, followed by a Fulbright Scholarship at the University of Hawaii. Back in Germany, he finished his studies in Hamburg. From 1978 to1982 he was Secretary of the German Association for Asian Studies and Editor of the quarterly „Asien“. Having completed the Hamburg School of Journalism, he became member of the Editorial Staff of DIE ZEIT with emphasis on East and Southeast Asia. From 1990 to 1997 he was Deputy Political Editor and Managing Editor of DIE ZEIT. From 1998 to 2010 he was Deputy Editor in Chief
of DIE ZEIT. Since January 2011 Matthias Nass is Chief International Correspondent of DIE ZEIT.

As Senior Vice President of Global Sales of the Identification business within NXP Semiconductors, Steve Owen is responsible for sales and marketing for markets such as smart urban mobility (Automatic Fare Collection), Smart Grid security (Authentication), Banking, eGovernment, Mobile Transactions, Tags & Labels and Infrastructure solutions.

Steve Owen began his career at Philips Semiconductors in 1998, holding various positions in the Multimarket Semiconductors Business Unit including European Marketing Director. He assumed his current position as Senior Vice President of Global Sales in April 2006. Before joining Philips Semiconductors Steve Owen held sales and marketing positions at Arrow Electronics and was a radio frequency engineer in The Royal Navy.

Steve Owen holds a Higher National Certificate in Communications Engineering and a Higher National Degree in Electronics and Electrical Engineering from the UK Business & Technician Education Council.

He is father of two children and based in Eindhoven, The Netherlands.

Prof. Dr. Papastamkos was born in 1955. In 1978 he graduated with a law degree from the Faculty of Law and Economics of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Further, he received a Doctor of Law from the Law School of the University of Tübingen, Germany, in 1981.

Between 1982 and 1989 he worked as researcher at the International and European Financial Law Centre. From 1998 to 2001 Prof. Dr. Papastamkos was a member of the teaching and research staff at the Legal Faculty of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. In 2001 he became professor of International and European Studies at the University of Piraeus where he was Vice Rector of the University between 2002 and 2004.

Prof. Dr. Papastamkos was a Member of the Greek Parliament between 1989 and 1996. In this time he served as Deputy Minister for National Economy (1990) and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs (1990-1993). He has been a Member of the European Parliament since 2004 where he has served as Vice President since 2012.

Quentin Peel is an associate editor of the Financial Times and chief correspondent in Germany. He was foreign editor and international affairs editor of the FT from 1994-2010, writing columns on foreign affairs, editorials and features.

As a foreign correspondent he was bureau chief in Brussels 1984-87, in Moscow during perestroika 1988-91, and in Bonn after German unification 1991-94. He was previously Johannesburg correspondent in South Africa (1976-81) and Africa editor (1981-84).

He joined the Financial Times in 1975 having graduated from Cambridge University with an honours degree in economics and modern languages. He is married with five children.

Since 1 July 2011 Jerzy Pomianowski has been coordinating the Asian, Middle East, African and international democracy dialogue issues in the work of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He has spent much of his professional career as a diplomat, including in high-level positions of Director of Department of Asia, Africa, Australia and Oceania (1992-1997), Ambassador of Poland to Japan (1997-2002) and Director-General of the Foreign Service (2005-2006). Between 2008 and 2011 he served as a Director of the OECD/UNDP Partnership for Democratic Governance reporting directly to the OECD Secretary-General. Prior to joining the Foreign Service, he served as a senior expert at the Cabinet of the Minister in the Ministry of National Education. He also used to work as an academic teacher at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the University of Warsaw (1988-1990) and as an expert at the UNESCO (1988). From 1980 until 1989 he was an active member of the democratic opposition in Poland. He holds M.A. from the University of Warsaw and speaks English, French, Russian and Bulgarian.

Dr. Li's hometown is Taiyuan, China. He graduated from the German Department of Beijing Foreign Studies University with a Master's degree in 1985, and continued his studies at the Eberhard Karls University of Tuebingen, Germany, obtaining his Doctorate degree in 1991. He subsequently held posts as a Lecturer & Assistant Professor at several universities in Germany and the USA. He joined Daimler AG in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1997, with the position of Manager and then Senior Manager in the External Affairs Department. Since 2003 he has served as the Executive Vice President of Daimler North East Asia Ltd. taking charge of Corporate Affairs.

Li Ruge is Chief Financial Officer of State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC). He is also the Vice Chairman of China Huaxia Bank. Previous to his current position, he hold positions as factory manager at Shandong ZHANHUA Electricity Industry Corporation, Director of Shandong Electric Power Company´s Fuel and Finance Division, Vice President of Shandong Electric Power Company, Chairman of Ying Da International Trust Fund Investment, Deputy CFO of China Guodian Corporation, and Deputy CFO of SGCC. Li graduated with a M.A. degree from Nankai University. He is also a senior certified accountant.

Professor Dr Annette Schavan has been Federal Minister of Education and Research and a Member of the German Bundestag since 2005. Before that she was Minister of Education, Youth and Sport of the Land of Baden-Württemberg for ten years. Since 1998 she has been Vice Chair of the German Christian Democratic Union (CDU). She studied Catholic Theology, Philosophy and Educational Sciences. She earned her doctoral degree (Dr. phil.) in 1980 with a thesis on conscience formation. In 2008 she was awarded the title of Honorary Professor of Catholic Theology at Freie Universität Berlin and an honorary PhD from the Department of Philosophy of Cairo University and was elected member of class I (philosophy and cultural history) of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. In 2010 she was awarded an honorary PhD from Tongji University in Shanghai.

Helmut Schmidt was born in Hamburg in 1918. After military service (1937-1945) he completed his education in Hamburg, studying economics and political science and graduating in 1949. Mr. Schmidt joined the Social Democratic Party (SPD) in 1946. During his political career, he held numerous executive positions: Member of the German Bundestag (1953–1961, 1965-1987), Member of the SPD Federal Executive (1958–1983), Minister of Domestic Affairs in Hamburg (1961–1965), Chairman of the SPD Parliamentary Party (1967–1969), Federal Minister of Defence (1969–1972), Federal Minister of Economics and Finance, then Federal Minister of Finance (1972–1974), Federal Chancellor of Germany (1974–1982). Since 1983, Mr. Schmidt is publisher of the German weekly DIE ZEIT and wrote a multitude of books. He holds numerous honorary degrees, e.g. from the Universities of Oxford, Cambridge, and is Honorary Chairman of the “Hamburg Summit: China meets Europe”.

Olaf Scholz was born in Osnabrück in 1958 and graduated from the Hamburg University with a degree in law. In 1975 he joined the Social Democratic Party (SPD) where he has held several senior positions including Deputy Chairman of the party’s youth organization and Secretary General of the party (2002-2004). Currently he is Vice Chairman of the German SPD and Chairman of the Hamburg SPD. He was Member of the German Bundestag (1998-2001, 2002-2011) holding senior positions in the SPD parliamentary group and Federal Minister of Labour and Social Affairs (2007-2009). In 2001 he served as Hamburg’s Minister of the Interior. Since 2011 Olaf Scholz is the First Mayor and President of the Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.

Nikolaus W. Schües was born in Hamburg in 1936. After his apprenticeship in the shipping business in Hamburg, London, Dublin and New York, he joined the shipping company F. Laeisz in 1961. Since 1973, he is general partner of F. Laeisz. As of 1986, he has been a member of the Plenary Assembly of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce.

He was elected Vice-President in 1990 and President in 1996. After his presidency he was reelected as Vice-President in 2002. From 1997 to 2005, Mr. Schües served as Vice-President of the Association of German Chambers of Industry and

Commerce (DIHK) and in 2006 has been elected as member of the Senior Committee of DIHK.

Dr. Margot Schüller is Senior Research Fellow at the German Institute of Global and Area Studies (GIGA) and Deputy Director of the GIGA, Institute of Asian Studies. She is a regular lecturer on Chinese and East Asian economics at universities in Germany and abroad and frequently consults governmental and private institutions. Her current research focuses on China’s economic development, especially the transition of the banking sector, China’s economic relations with neighbouring countries in Asia, China’s innovation system, and the globalization of Chinese companies.

Mr. Yao Shenhong, born in Shanghai, studied at the China Foreign Affairs University and Nankai University, and achieved a master degree on international economics. Mr. Yao started to work for the China International Center for Economic and Technical Exchanges (CICETE) from 1986, then transferred to the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic cooperation of China (MOFTEC), and worked for the Bo’ao Asia Forum for three years. Mr. Yao worked at the Ministry of Commerce of China (MOFCOM) as Vice Director of Department of International Trade and Economic Affairs, Vice Director of Department of Information Technology, and held concurrent post of Vice Director of Information Office and spokesman. In 2008 he went back to the China International Center for Economic and Technical Exchanges (CICETE) as Director-General. Mr. Yao acted as Executive Vice Chairman and Secretary General of the China Association of Trade in Services (CATIS) from November, 2008.

Dennis J. Snower is President of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, Professor of Economics at the Christian-Albrechts University Kiel and Director of the Global Economic Symposium.

As part of his research career, he originated the “insider-outsider” theory of employment and unemployment with Assar Lindbeck, the theory of “high-low search” with Steve Alpern, and the “chain reaction” theory of unemployment and the theory of “frictional growth” with Marika Karanassou and Hector Sala. He was a seminal contributor to the macroeconomics of imperfect competition, and has published on labor economics, macroeconomic theory and policy, and the design of welfare systems. He has recently proposed a new explanation of the inflation-unemployment tradeoff.

He has advised the European commission and various OECD countries on employment policy and welfare state policy. He has consulted for the IMF, World Bank, OECD, SNS, and UN. He has been a visiting professor at many universities around the world.

Dr. Theo Sommer pursued his academic studies in history, political science, and international relations at the University of Tübingen; Manchester College; and the University of Chicago. In 1958, he started his career at DIE ZEIT. In 1969/1970, Sommer was called upon to set up and head the Policy Planning Staff of the German Defence Ministry. From 1972 to 1992, he served as Editor-in-Chief of DIE ZEIT and afterwards joined Marion Countess Dönhoff and former Chancellor Helmut Schmidt as one of the paper’s co-publishers. In the 1990s, he acted as Vice-Chairman of the commission on “Common Security and the Future of the German Army”, was a member of the International Commission on the Balkans, and the Independent International Commission on Kosovo. In addition to his current appointment, Sommer is dean, moderator and academic head of the Bucerius Summer School in Hamburg. He was president of the German society for Asian studies and is a member of the German-Japanese Forum, the German-Korean Forum and the Indo-German Advisory Group. In 1979 he published a book on the rise of China (Die chinesische Karte).

Axel Stepken was born in Essen, Germany. He graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering from the RWTH Aachen and achieved his PhD in High Voltage Engineering in 1989.

Upon completion of his PhD, Axel Stepken worked at ABB where he held several management positions in Germany and Indonesia within the power transmission and distribution segment. He joined TÜV SÜD AG as member of the board of management responsible for the INDUSTRY and the former PEOPLE Strategic Business segments as well as the strategic region ASIA. In June 2007 Axel Stepken was appointed chairman of the board of management.

John Stoop is President of the Federation of Belgian Chambers of Commerce since 2006. He is senior counsel at Lydian Lawyers in Antwerp and President of the Board of Vesta Terminal Antwerp. John Stoop is also President of the Flemish Organisation for Mediation and Arbitration VOBA, board member of the Belgian-Luxembourg-Arab Chamber of Commerce and honorary president of the Antwerp Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He is honorary consul of the Republic of Kazakhstan for the Kingdom of Belgium since 1997. He is a former member of the board of the Antwerp World Diamond Centre. John Stoop was born in Antwerp in 1947. He has a law degree from the University of Brussels.

Dr. Sabine Stricker-Kellerer is advising on legal aspects of doing business in China, based on her 25 years of experience on China business matters and monitoring speed and shape of recent developments. She was the first lawyer to set up a presence for a continental European law firm in China back in 1985. As Senior China Counsel of the international law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP, she divides her time between Germany and China. She is a member of the Panel of Arbitrators of the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC), and a member of the German Chinese Dialogue Forum. She studied law in Munich, Geneva and Harvard.

Dr. Monika Stärk currently is Secretary General of the German Chinese Dialogue Forum, assisting in this position the German Chairman Prof. Bruno O. Braun, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of TÜV Rheinland AG. The German Chinese Dialogue Forum is a high-ranking bilateral advisory group initiated by the governments of both countries and composed of relevant personalities from business, politics, media and civil society to openly discuss issues of mutual interest. Dr. Stärk has been an expert on German-Chinese economic relations and the Asia-Pacific region since 2000, when she started working for the OAV – German Asia-Pacific Business Association. She was Executive Member of the Board of this business association from 2003 to 2010 and by virtue of this office Managing Director of the APA – Asia-Pacific Committee of German Business. In this position, she has been working both on economic analysis of the Asia-Pacific region and on practical advice to German companies active in the region. Prior to joining OAV, Dr. Stärk has worked in publishing and the online media industry. She has completed studies of literature and philosophy in Erlangen and Paris.

Dr. Frank Umbach is Associate Director of the European Centre for Energy and Resource Security (EUCERS), King‘s College London; Senior Associate and Head of the Programme “International Energy Security” at the Centre for Euro­pean Security Strategies (CESS) GmbH, Munich-Berlin & Non Resident Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council of the United States, Washington D.C. He is an expert on energy, raw material, foreign and security policies with a regional expertise of Asia-Pacific (i.e. China and Japan), Russia, the Caspian Region, and Europe/Transatlantic. Previously, he was head of the programmes „International Energy Security“ and „Security Policies in Asia-Pacific” at the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) in Bonn and Berlin (1996-2007), and worked before at the Federal Institute for East European and International Studies (BIOst) in Cologne, in the office of the NATO-General Secretary in Brussels, and the Japan Institute for International Affairs in Tokyo.

Ms. Xu Weili was born in 1954, and is a senior economist. She is now Chairwoman of Harbin Touping group, member of Harbin Municipal CPPCC committee and member of the Standing Committee of the People's Congress of Xiangfang District. She also serves as Vice Chairwoman of the Cooperation Committee for Promoting Enterprises, Universities and Research Institutes of Heilongjiang Province, member of the Executive Committee of the Women’s Federation of Heilongjiang Province and Harbin City; Vice President of the Association of Women Entrepreneurs of Heilongjiang Province and Harbin City; Chairwoman of the Xiangfang District Industrial Association of State Power Generation Equipment Industry Base.
Harbin TouPing group is a comprehensive shareholding corporate enterprise integrating manufacturing of power station equipments, installation engineering of power stations and construction engineering. The group holds the qualifications for manufacturing of level I and II pressure vessels, level II construction engineering, level III Installation engineering of power stations as well as import and export license.

Hakan Wohlin is Managing Director and Global Head of Debt Origination, Capital Markets & Treasury Solutions (CMTS), having joined Deutsche Bank AG in London in 2002. He oversees the origination of debt products for the banks corporate, financial and public sector clients. Hakan Wohlin is a member of the CMTS Executive Committee, and Chairs the CMTS Debt Origination Executive Committee.

Between 1999 and 2002 he was CFO & Executive Vice President of Business & Corporate Development at Corechange, an international software company in New York. Between 1989 and 1999, he worked in various derivatives marketing and capital markets financing roles, primarily at Bear, Stearns & Co., Inc., covering corporations and financial institutions.

He holds a Master’s degree in business from Stockholm University, and undertook postgraduate studies at Harvard University Economics Department.

Mr. Lu Yaohua was born in 1947. Graduated from China University of Mining and Technology, he is now a professorate senior engineer and also a member of the 11th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. Mr. Lu used to work as Deputy Director and later Director of Shanxi Coal Mine Infrastructure Construction Bureau. In 1992, he was transferred to Beijing and worked on a series of posts from Deputy Director of the Infrastructure Construction Bureau of the previous China Coal Mines Corporation, to General Manager, Party Secretary and Chief Engineer of China Coal Construction and Development Corporation, Director General of the Infrastructure Construction Department of the former Ministry of Coal and Director General of Enterprise and Institution Reform Department of State Administration of Coal Industry.

Since 1998, he has served as a State Council Special Inspector, Chairman of the State Council accredited Supervisory Board of Key State-owned Large Enterprises, Executive Vice Chairman of China Federation of Industrial Economics and also Vice Chairman of China Coal Industry Association.

Dr. Dahai Yu was born in Shanghai (China) in 1961. He studied chemistry at the University of Hamburg, where he obtained his doctorate in 1989. Following a research scholarship, he joined former Degussa AG (since September 12, 2007: Evonik Industries AG) as a laboratory manager in Central Research in 1990. His long career at Evonik Industries included posts as Product Manager in fine chemicals, Project Director for technology transfer, Director of corporate strategy, Senior Vice President of Controlling and Finance for the Fine & Industrial Chemicals Business Unit, Vice President & General Manager of the Agrochemicals & Intermediates Business Line. In 2006 Dr. Yu returned to his home city Shanghai as President of Evonik’s Greater China Region and Chairman of Evonik Degussa (China) Co., Ltd. He has been a member of the Executive Board of Evonik Industries AG since April 2011.

Mr. Huang Yuezhong was born in 1943, in Jiangsu Province. From 1962 to 1968, he studied in the Department of Automatic Control at Tsinghua University. His past work experience ranges from Deputy Director of the former Anhui Economic Commission, Head of the Provincial Military Bureau, Deputy Director of the provincial National Defense Science and Industry Office, the Deputy Director of the Provincial Planning Commission and Director of the Provincial Economic Collaboration Office, Director of the Provincial Planning Commission, Assistant to Vice Governor of Anhui Province, Vice Governor of Anhui Province, Secretary of the Working Committee for Enterprises of the Provincial Party Committee, Director of Provincial SASAC as well as the Deputy Director of the 10th Provincial People's Congress. From December 2007 to January 2008, Mr. Huang was appointed Acting Director of the Anhui Province People's Congress Standing Committee and has been Dean of the Anhui Institute of Business Administration since 1998 with several monograph publications. In February 2012, he was appointed Chairman of Anhui Provincial Federation of Industrial Economics.

Mr. Mao Zhenhua has successively done economic research in Hubei Provincial Bureau of Statistics, Hainan Provincial Government Research Center and Research Office of the State Council. He founded China Chengxin Credit Management Co., Ltd. in 1992. As a prolific researcher in macro-economics, capital market and credit rating theory, he published monographs including The Theory of Capitalized Corporate System. He presided over research on Chinese credit rating methods and mechanism, initiated and engaged in several major symposiums in China and abroad.

Graduated from Wuhan University, Mr. Mao received a Ph. D. in Economics and a Postdoctoral Fellowship in CASS. His other titles are Executive Director of CFIE, Director of China Entrepreneurs Forum, Director-General of Dong FuReng Foundation, Director of the Institute of Economic Research of RUC as well as Adjunct Professor of the Graduate School of CASS and SWUFE.
